The second most-visited cultural place in Cluj is a house students asked for in 1921

The “Dumitru Fărcaș” Students' Culture House has 4,950 Google reviews — more than the Art Museum, the National Opera and the National Theatre. Its listing is claimed by nobody.

When we measured presence — the reviews left by people who actually went somewhere — the ranking came out differently than we expected. First, BT Arena. Second, a building we had never written a line about.

The Students' Culture House: 4,950 reviews. The Art Museum has 2,076. The National Theatre, 3,189. The National Opera, 1,687.

Asked for in 1921, opened in 1957

As early as 1921, Cluj students set out in a local paper their wish for a culture house. Until then, activities took place in improvised clubs in the modest rooms of each of the city's seven higher-education institutions.

The wish was granted in 1956, by a decision creating student associations and establishing Students' Culture Houses in every university centre. In early October 1956 a provisional council was appointed, made up of students and young academics.

The council proposed as director the university assistant Hodorog Laurențiu, cultural officer at “Victor Babeș” University.

Activity was inaugurated on 10 February 1957, with a programme of music and humour. Thirty-six years from the request to the first evening.

What it is today

Piața Lucian Blaga 1–3. Phone: 0264 598 024. It carries the name of Dumitru Fărcaș.

The hours shown on Google are 08:00–22:00, every day of the week — the range of an institution that stays open, not of a hall that opens for a performance.

Its own site has sections for ensembles, calendar, events, gallery and rates, plus the transparency documents the law requires: budget, balance sheet, salary scales, asset declarations. It is a public institution and behaves like one.

And yet, the listing

With 4,950 reviews, the Culture House's Google listing is not claimed by the institution.

It is not the only one. Of fifty places measured, twenty listings are unclaimed, carrying 21,239 reviews between them. The Culture House is the largest of them.

In practice that means the hours, the photographs and the replies to reviews — everything seen by anyone searching “casa de cultura a studentilor cluj”, which is 1,300 people a month — are in the public's hands, not the institution's. Claiming a listing is free and takes a few days.

Why we had not written about it

Because we started this guide from contemporary art and worked slowly outwards. The Culture House is not a gallery and not a theatre; it is infrastructure.

But 4,950 people were impressed enough to stop and write something. That is more than we can say for any gallery here — all twelve of them together have 195.
