Adrian Ghenie
The most-searched name in contemporary art with Cluj roots — and co-founder of the gallery that carried the city's scene to Berlin.
In 2005, two people opened a gallery in a city with no art market. One was a curator, Mihai Pop. The other was a 28-year-old painter: Adrian Ghenie. They called it Plan B, and the name said exactly what it needed to — this was nobody's first plan.
Three years later Plan B had a permanent space in Berlin. In 2009 it initiated Fabrica de Pensule, an independent centre in a former paintbrush factory that housed around five galleries and thirty studios. In 2015 Ghenie represented Romania at the Venice Biennale, with Mihai Pop curating.
What matters for this city is not the auction record. It is that the road from a studio in Cluj to a gallery in Berlin was walked once, by people with names, and that the route stayed open for whoever came next.
