n. 1974, Cluj
Victor Man
Born and trained in Cluj, he represented Romania in Venice in 2007 and is now in the collections of Tate and the Centre Pompidou.
Victor Man was born in Cluj in 1974 and graduated from the city’s University of Art and Design in 2004, having also studied at the Jerusalem Studio School. In 2007, three years after his diploma, he was in the Romanian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, in the exhibition “Low-Budget Monuments”.
The list of museums since then is long: Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 2009, MUDAM in Luxembourg in 2012, the Deutsche Bank KunstHalle in Berlin and the Haus der Kunst in Munich in 2014 — the year Deutsche Bank named him Artist of the Year — and the Städel Museum in Frankfurt in 2023. In 2015 he was in the Venice Biennale’s main exhibition. His work is in the collections of Tate, the Centre Pompidou, LACMA and SFMOMA.
Galeria Plan B, which represents him, started in Cluj in 2005. His official biography now says only that he “lives and works in Europe”; the beginning is here, and that does not change.
