He has run the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj since 1990, founded the Interferences festival and is president of the Union of the Theatres of Europe.
Tompa Gábor was born in Târgu Mureș in 1957 and has run the Hungarian State Theatre of Cluj since 1990, as general and artistic director. In 2007 he founded the international Interferences festival in Cluj, where he is artistic director.
The theatre joined the Union of the Theatres of Europe in 2008; since 2018 Tompa has been its president. He has directed in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Austria, Canada, South Korea, the United States, Portugal and Luxembourg, headed directing at the University of California, San Diego, and received, among others, the Hevesi Sándor Prize and several UNITER awards.
He is a different kind of anchor from the painters on this list: not a name that left Cluj, but one that brings the world here, to the stage on Emil Isac Street, with every edition of Interferences.
