Craft is not searched locally. It is the one section of this site that should not be about Cluj
“Ie tradițională” draws 8,100 searches a month in Romania and 320 in Cluj. On institutions, Cluj is half the national demand. On craft, it is four per cent.
The site has had a craft section from the start: the traditional blouse, ceramics, custom furniture. We built it like everything else — as a Cluj directory.
We only measured it now, and the result says we built it wrong.
The figure
Twenty-four craft terms, measured in Romania and separately in Cluj. National total: 18,190 searches a month. Cluj total: 820.
Cluj is 4.5% of national craft demand.
For comparison, on institutions the ratio is entirely different: “opera cluj” has 3,600 of 6,600 nationally — 55%. “Teatru cluj”, 53%. “Cinema Florin Piersic”, 67%. Institutions are searched by the people who live near them. Craft is not.
Term by term
“Ie tradițională”: 8,100 nationally, 320 in Cluj — 4%. “Mobilă la comandă”: 2,900 and 90 — 3%. “Costum popular”: 2,400 and 90. “Ie românească”: 1,600 and 70. “Ceramică de Horezu”: 880 and 40.
Horezu pottery comes from Vâlcea, four hundred kilometres away. It appears in the measurement because it is the most-searched kind of Romanian pottery — and because nobody searches for “Cluj pottery”.
And in English
“Romanian folk art”: 170 monthly searches in the United States. “Romanian folk costume”: 140 in the US and 210 in the UK. “Romanian pottery”: 140 and 90. “Romanian embroidery”: 110 and 40.
International demand for Romanian craft is comparable to demand for our contemporary artists. But it is for “Romanian”, never for “from Cluj”.
What that means for the site
That the other sections answer the question “where, in Cluj” correctly, and craft answers a different one: “what is this object and who still makes it”.
A directory of Cluj craftspeople would serve 820 searches a month, split across twenty-four terms. A good piece on what an ie is and how it is sewn could serve 8,100.
The local tie remains, but elsewhere: the “Romulus Vuia” Ethnographic Park and the Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania are where these objects can actually be seen in Cluj. Between them they hold over 4,600 reviews. Craft is searched nationally; it is visited here.
What we are correcting
The craft records on this site stay, but not as local listings. We treat them as subjects: the object, the technique, where it can be seen in Cluj.
This is the second time in two weeks that a measurement has told us our premise was too narrow. The first was about festivals. It is a pattern, and we are noting it.
What this is about
-
Parcul Etnografic Romulus Vuia
The open-air section of the Ethnographic Museum — vernacular architecture moved and rebuilt.
-
Muzeul Etnografic al Transilvaniei
The richest collection of traditional craft in the region — and the natural starting point for any conversation about the Romanian blouse, pottery or weaving.
