Untold has twice the search demand of every cultural institution in Cluj combined

“Untold”: 27,100 searches a month in Romania, 8,100 in Cluj. “Electric castle”: 27,100 and 6,600. “Jazz in the park”: 2,400 and 1,300. “TIFF”: 3,600 and 1,600, plus 880 for “tiff program”.

Those four names alone clear 60,000 monthly searches.

For comparison, everything we have measured so far — the opera, both national theatres, both Hungarian institutions, the philharmonic, the cinemas, the museums, the galleries, the ethnographic park, the art schools — does not reach half of it.

It does not mean festivals are “more important”. It means an event with a fixed date concentrates into one month a demand that a permanent institution spreads across twelve.

A festival is searched because it has a deadline: tickets, line-up, accommodation, who is playing. An opera is searched steadily, but less often. These are two different forms of attention, and the second is harder to win and harder to lose.

It is also worth saying that Untold and Electric Castle are not art festivals. They are international-scale music festivals, and their figures say something about Cluj as a destination rather than about its creative scene.

TIFF is the interesting case, because it is the only one of the four that is an arts festival and that leaves a trace across the rest of the year.

TIFF.25 — the twenty-fifth edition — ran in 2026. In September the festival runs TIFF Florești: ten evenings of open-air film between 11 and 20 September in Parcul Poligon, plus free creativity and animation workshops for children and teenagers.

And Cinema Victoria, a permanent hall with 1,003 reviews, carries a category in its own programme called the TIFF Cinematheque. That is how a festival leaks into an institution: not through figures, through programming.

We have written several times on this site that the city does not search for its culture. That is false, and four times over.

Cluj searches hard for its festivals, then its opera and theatres, then its cinemas, then its museums. What it does not search for are the contemporary art galleries — one category, out of many.

That is a far smaller claim than the one we were making, and it is the only one the data supports.
