Școala de la Cluj
A term coined in another country, for a generation that never called itself that.
The “Cluj School” is not a school. The term was first used at the Prague Biennale in 2007 for a group of emerging Romanian artists, by analogy with the Barbizon School and the Neue Leipziger Schule.
What binds them is a generation, not a manifesto: people born roughly between 1975 and 1985, mostly trained at the Art and Design University in Cluj, who came of age in post-1989 Romania.
Measured in searches, the term is dead: zero, in English, in the United States and the United Kingdom. The people's names, by contrast, are searched. Which is why this page exists as a story rather than as a category label — and why you will not find a section on this site called “Cluj School”.
