Marius Bercea was born in 1979 and grew up in Cluj. He took his BA at the University of Art and Design in 2003 and his MA in 2005, and later began teaching there. He is a founding member of the Laika collective, which had studio and exhibition space in the Paintbrush Factory.

His paintings are in the collections of the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, the Taubman Museum of Art in Virginia and Space K in Seoul, and in the Zabludowicz Collection in London. The François Ghebaly gallery has given him solo shows in Los Angeles (2012, 2016, 2020) and New York (2022); he has also had solo shows at the Cluj Museum of Art and at Art Encounters in Timișoara.

He does not yet have a Venice pavilion or a solo show in a museum abroad. What he does have is what many lack: he stayed, and he teaches the generation coming next.
